Following a disappointing wrestling meet against Owen last Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Wolverines swept Hendersonville and Christ School at Columbus on Friday, Jan. 16.

Defeating Hendersonville, a conference rival, made the Wolverines 3-2 in the Western Highlands Conference, with hopes of securing a number one seed in the conference tournament, which is set for Jan. 30 at Polk.

As the meet against Hendersonville began with the 182-pound class, Anthony Marino’s 7-3 win at 152, clinched the win for the Wolverines, who tripped the Bearcats, 43-36.

Other Wolverine winners in that meet were Devin Panchyshyn, by pin at 195 pounds; Chase Emory, by pin at 138, after leading his opponent, 13-0; and Dustin Calvert, 14-1 major decision at 145. Forfeit wins at 106, 113 and heavyweight, helped the Wolverines.

A full roster helped Polk upend Christ School, 60-21, as the Wolverines recorded five forfeit wins and five pins, sending fans home shortly after 8 p.m.

Jose Chavez started Polk’s pin parade, decking David Lehr at 126. At 132 pounds, Dillon Knighton pinned Flynn Cruse, while Chase Emory recorded his second pin of the night (over Grant Watson at 138 pounds).

Dustin Calvert glued Kels Peterson to the mat at 145 pounds. Anthony Marino, who was bumped up to 160, pinned Will Hulsong. This time, the Wolverines coasted after Marino’s victory, earning three forfeit wins to close the meet.

Not all the pins went to Polk. Marquise Lipscomb, gave up lots of weight in the heavyweight match, where he lost by fall to Chester Zhao. Powell Foreshaw and Lot Turner also recorded pins for Christ School.

“I’m pretty excited about that,” Polk’s coach Phillip Miller noted about the two wins. “It puts us back in the conference race. Now we control our own destiny to be the number one seed (In the conference tournament).”

“We just didn’t wrestle well,” Miller lamented, speaking about conference rival, Owen. “We should have beaten them, but we didn’t.”

Owen took the meet, 44-33.

Polk’s only on-the-mat win was Anthony Marino’s 4-0 decision over Thomas Neal at 160. Aside from that, the teams traded forfeit wins, and the Warhorses added four pins and a technical fall. The latter was good for five team points.

Jan. 20 is Polk’s last conference meet of the season, as the Wolverines host Madison at 6 p.m. This Saturday, Polk is slated to take part in the Razor Rumble at Walhalla. Time will be announced.
