Jacqueline “Jackie” Martin Hartman, 65, died unexpectedly in Phoenix, Ariz. on Oct. 9, 2014.
She is survived by her daughter, Jaylin Hartman, and brother, Benjamin Martin. A long-time
resident of Tryon and Columbus, Jackie was a psychotherapist who worked both in her
private practice and with Arizona Crisis Specialists.
Jackie graduated from Tryon High School in 1966 where she served as president of the
student council and a cheerleader. She graduated magna cum laude from both Bellevue
University and Western Carolina University and received her M.S.W. from UNC-Chapel Hill
in 1981.
Jackie was one of the founders of Hospice of the Carolina Foothills (one of the first in North
Carolina) and held several positions there, including executive director. She served as
Director of Discharge Planning and Social Services at St. Luke’s Hospital from 1989-1994.
She received the Hospice Most Valued Leadership Award in 1982, the Governor’s Volunteer
Director Award in 1981, and the Susan Reynolds Award for Innovative Leadership in 1994.
Jackie was a wonderful friend and a real cheerleader to many of us even after she and Jaylin
moved to Phoenix. Her enthusiasm for life and love for Jaylin were an inspiration to all who
knew her. Her plan had always been to come back to North Carolina as soon as she could.
