Ben Juchems

Ben Juchems, 90, of Conrad passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at his residence in Oak Estates. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at the Union Community Church in Union, Iowa. Visitation was held 5 – 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at the Conrad Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be in Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora, Iowa with the committal service by the Montaque Lodge #117 of Eldora. A memorial fund has been established. Ben was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Steamboat Rock, the son of Cornelius and Amke (Rotgers) Juchems.

He married the love of his life, Betty McBride on June 1, 1952, in Hubbard. Ben farmed near Eldora until 1960 when he moved to a farm in Grundy County. Farming was Ben’s lifelong passion. He raised his family and was involved in the community for more than 50 years. He belonged to the Masons, O.E.S., was involved with the Lions Club, Farm Bureau and was a very active member of the Kiwanis. He was an active participant in the building of Dreamland Playground at the elementary school in Conrad and also involved with the building committees with the First Presbyterian Church of Conrad and the Community Church in Union.

Ben is survived by three sons, David (Janice) of Conrad; Rick (Jane) of Plainfield; Alex (Sue) of Auburn, Wash.; two daughters, Becky Wiebensohn of West Des Moines and Marla (Jeffrey) Bailey of Tryon, N.C.; two sisters, Florence Burns of Steamboat Rock and Jan Allen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, wife, brother Jay, and son-in-law Rick Wiebensohn.

The family would like to thank the staff of Oak Estates and Hospice Compassus for the compassion and care provided to Ben during his last days.
