The Blue Ridge String Quartet and pianist Kymric Mahnke will perform a chamber music recital on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Tryon, N.C. Works by William Grant Still, Gerald Siddons and Johannes Brahms will be performed.
Still’s “Danzas de Panama,” scored for string quartet, were inspired by a collection of Panamanian dance themes put together and notated by Elizabeth Waldo. Still evokes the sound of native instruments and Caribbean color in these four dances.
In regard to his work, Two Pieces for String Quartet: Reflections and Dance, Gerald Siddons writes, “These two short pieces attempt to utilize a few of the many colors, sonorities, and textures that the string quartet offers.”
The Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor, a work of great complexity, beauty, and power, will also be performed by Blue Ridge String Quartet members John Malloy, violin; Joanna Mulfinger Lebo, violin; Jan Daugherty, viola; Kathleen Foster, Cello; and Kymric Mahnke, piano.
The public is invited to attend this recital free of charge. Holy Cross is located at 150 Melrose Ave., Tryon, N.C.. For more information, call the church office at 828-859-9741.
