The Airing of the Quilts, a colorful outdoor display, takes place in Landrum on Saturday, July 19, from 8 a.m. until 1 p. m.
More than 30 old and new quilts hanging on clothesline will transform a portion of the North Trade Avenue green next to the Farmers Market. Local merchants are also encouraged to hang quilts in their windows or drape them over outdoor tables and benches.
The event celebrates Landrum’s quilting heritage and the Foothills Quilt Trail, which features 24 intricately painted outdoor blocks hanging throughout the city, ranging in size from one foot square to eight feet square.
The celebration also coincides with the last day of the Carolina Shop Hop which attracts quilters from the two Carolinas to visit Elaine’s Attic Quilt Shop on E. Rutherford St. The shop’s patio will feature more quilts and the small fabric blocks which were prototypes for the large quilt trail blocks.
The Landrum Quilters are coordinating the display along with the City of Landrum and the Landrum Area Business Association.
The airing is one of Landrum’s Third Saturday Morning special summer events.
Traditionally, winter quilts were collected at the end of the season and hung outside in the fresh spring air before they were put up until the return of cold weather.
Landrum, with its vintage store fronts, features many locally-owned restaurants, antique and specialty shops within the city limits.
