Even when it comes to ogres, there’s a love story.  Girl meets boy and there’s magic in the air, even if it takes a little while to come together. Tryon Little Theater’s Summer Youth Production of “Shrek the Musical” opens this Thursday at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and for all its silliness and wacky characters, there is a love story and so much more.
Candace Arrington plays adult Fiona, prisoner in a dragon-guarded tower, waiting for her hero to rescue her.  Arrington is 19, a graduate of Polk County High School, and has been in productions since she was seven years old.  She took acting, singing and dancing lessons at Flat Rock Playhouse and has appeared in many productions there, as well as Beauty and the Beast for TLT a few years ago.
“I love my character,” she says.  “She’s not only a goofy princess, but weird and gross too! I’ve enjoyed getting reacquainted with people I know in the cast and haven’t seen in a while, and Chris Tinkler is awesome to work with.”
Price Marshall plays Shrek and was instrumental in getting Arrington to audition.  He’s a rising senior at Polk County High School and was most recently seen on the TLT stage as one of the suitors in “Fiddler on the Roof”.
“Shrek is unlike any other part I’ve played before,” says Marshall. “Shrek’s a very isolated character but hopeful, and has a great desire to be a good person.  He feels like an outcast – like he’s an ‘untouchable’ – and he’s resigned to that, but would like more in his life. He is definitely fun to portray.”
As ogres, these talented young actors help us understand that there’s more to life than just what you see on the surface.  Get your tickets for some good life lessons and a bundle of laughs!  The show runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are available from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Tryon Little Theater Workshop at 516 S. Trade St. Tryon, Visit www.tltinfo.org  or call 828-859-2466 for more information.
