Tryon Arts & Crafts School will once again offer a one-of-a-kind summer camp experience in the arts.  Each week professional artists will introduce the students to at least 8 different arts and crafts. Students will have the opportunity to discover hidden talents, learn how many art forms are created and experience the joy of creating works of art to share with family and friends. The summer camp offers community youth an opportunity to work with professional grade tools in well-equipped studios as they complete their projects. They will get a true understanding of these crafts. New friendships, new skills and lasting memories are the highlights of the Summer Sizzler Youth Arts Program.
This year’s classes include: pottery and fused glass with Karoline Shaffer and John O’Rourke, weaving with Marla Bailey, woodworking with Chris Carroll, jewelry making with Allison Rattarree, folk tales with Linda Powell, book and printmaking with Christine Mariotti, basketry with Carla Filippelli, tie dye and sculpture with Lori Pickering, felting with June Rhoads, leatherwork with Karl Boyer, recycled art with David Edgar, painting and stenciling with Amy Owens and blacksmithing with Jack Turner. At least eight of these topics will be presented during each of the five weeks of camp.
Camp dates are: July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-August 1 and August 4-8.  Classes run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a lunch break. Students should bring a lunch, snack and a drink and are encouraged to wear clothing that they don’t have to worry about so that creativity can flow unhindered. Each week will conclude with a show of student work on Friday afternoon. Doors will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for student drop off and pick up.
They will also be offering two local high school students the opportunity to intern this summer in the Summer Sizzler program. This opportunity is funded in part by a grant from the Student Intern program of the Polk County Community Foundation.
Summer Sizzler is designed for students 10 and older. Advanced registration is required. Class size is limited. To register or for more information, please call Tryon Arts & Crafts School at (828) 859-8323. Online registration is also available at www.TryonArtsandCrafts.org.
