The Glassy Mountain Fire Department is holding a free Community Family Fun Day, Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their Headquarters Station, 2015 Hwy 11, Landrum. The day will include fire and safety demonstrations, games and free food.
“At Glassy Mountain Fire Department (GMFD), while we do provide special education programs during Fire Prevention Week in the fall, we believe that ongoing education of the community is one of the keys to fire safety and prevention,” said Tiffany Haynes, Fire and Life Safety Educator and Firefighter/EMT, GMFD.  “And we think an educational Community Family Fun Day is a great way to involve the whole family.”
The Community Family Fun Day will highlight various activities spanning various facets of emergency services, including:
• S.C. Highway Patrol’s Roll-Over Simulator.
• Greenville County’s Emergency Response Team Truck 5 demonstrating rope rescue.
• MAMA (Mountain Area Medical Airlift) helicopter
• CPR demonstrations.
• SAFE Kids Buddy’s House
• Home fire escape drills in the fire prevention trailer.
Free smoke detectors will be available for district residents who can’t afford them. For more information call 864-895-4306.
The Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area was established in 1987 for the purpose of organizing a volunteer fire department to provide fire/safety protection and a first response emergency unit within the community.
The Glassy Mountain Fire Service Area covers nearly 52 square miles with a population of approximately 8,000 residents in the area known as The Dark Corner in northern Greenville County which stretches from the east at the Spartanburg County line on Highway 14 to the west of Highway 25 and begins in the south near Highway 414 to the North Carolina state line.
The District operates five fire stations–Glassy Mountain (Headquarters), Beaver Dam, Oak Grove, Dividing Water and Cliffs with approximately 40 volunteer firefighters and first responders.
