Polk rec to offer competitive swimming

Polk County Recreation will offer competitive swimming this summer for children ages 6 to 17 This is a first for Polk County.

The program will be offered each Friday morning from 8  –10 a.m. at Gibson Pool. Instruction in the four basic competitive strokes will be taught along with the proper arm, leg and breathing and racing starts. Each class will feature a conditioning phase of dry land exercises, kicking and pulling warm up drills, stroke technique instruction, followed by swimming drills to work on specific areas of the strokes, along with stroke correction. Each session will end with fun swimming games.

Cary Davenport, former co-Captain of the University of Alabama Swimming and Diving Team and an all SEC swimmer with many years of competitive swimming coaching experience will be heading up the program.

Tryouts for the program will be held on Saturday, May 31 from 10– 11 a.m. The tryouts will be to determine the children’s group placement.

Summer Swim Team is also available for families interested in joining the Boiling Springs Summer Swim Team in Spartanburg, S.C. Children can train in Polk County and Spartanburg. Swim meets are held every Tuesday night for five weeks followed by the Spartanburg County Swimming Championships in early July.
