Free tax assistance and preparation for low and moderate-income individuals, with special attention to those age 60 and older, is available for taxpayers from AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.
Free tax assistance continues to be available every Wednesday through April 9 at the Columbus location by appointment only. This will take place each Wednesday (call 828-894-8721 ext. 221 for appointment) at the Polk County Public Library in the Community Conference Room, which is located at 1289 West Mills Street, Columbus.
Individuals must remember to bring to their AARP Tax-Aide appointment the following items:
• Federal tax return from the previous year
• Photo Identification
• Social Security card
• 2013 tax information (e.g. 1099, 1099R, W2, brokerage statements, etc.)
Any individual who wishes to authorize a direct deposit on any tax refund must bring a blank check for bank routing information.
AARP Tax-Aide is a program of the AARP Foundation, offered in conjunction with the IRS.
The AARP Foundation is AARP’s affiliated charity. Foundation programs provide security, protection and empowerment for older persons in need. Low-income older workers receive the job training and placement they need to rejoin the workforce. The foundation’s litigation staff protects the legal rights of older Americans in critical health and long-term care as well as consumer and employment situations.
Additional programs provide information, education and services to ensure that people over 50 lead lives of independence, dignity and purpose. Foundation programs are funded by grants, tax-deductible contributions and AARP.
