Holy Cross Episcopal Church will host the 2014 Foothills Music Club Organ Recital on Thursday, March 13 at 3 p.m.
This recital is an annual event, the location of which rotates among area Tryon churches.
Representing six different churches, the recitalists this year are Cecilia England, John Gardner, Susie Mahnke, Diane Pickens, Nancy Walburn and Meryt Wilson.
The organ program will include selections from Ned Rorem’s “A Quaker Reader,” a setting of “Es ist da Heil uns Kommen her” by an unknown composer, and “Sortie,” a movement from “Suite Liturgique,” by Canadian composer Denis Bedard.
The Foothills Music Club Chorale, under the direction of Rita Stobbe, will also perform. Choral selections are “The Lord Is My Shepherd” by Howard Goodall and “Lift Thine Eyes” from “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn.
The Foothills Music Club was founded in 1988 by Lesley Oakes, with the assistance of Kathleen Erwin and Betty Van Buskirk. In 1994, the music club inaugurated its scholarship program. Since then, nearly $40,000 has been awarded to talented young musicians to further their music study. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Foothills Music Club, Inc., P. O. Box 463, Lynn, N.C., 28750.
The 58-rank organ at Holy Cross was rebuilt by John Dower in 1994-1995. It is maintained by John Dower and Lincoln Pipe Organs, Lincolnton, N.C.
This organ recital is free and open to the public. Holy Cross Episcopal church is located at 150 Melrose Avenue, Tryon. For more information, call the church office at 828-859-9741.
