Jean Shumway, one of the most recent community volunteers to be inducted into the Second Wind Hall of Fame, is the perfect example of one who has devoted her talents and energy to the benefit of others.
Consider St. Luke’s Hospital: Shumway volunteers at the admitting desk every Monday morning and serves as a member of the board of trustees of the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation. She also served as president of the St. Luke’s Auxiliary and was recently honored for having contributed 5,500 hours of volunteer service.
Consider St. Luke’s Thrift Shop: Shumway is a mainstay of the thrift shop, working volunteer hours, organizing special sales, sorting donations, etc. The thrift shop donates thousands of dollars to St. Luke’s to purchase needed equipment.
Consider Hospice of the Carolina Foothills: A retired nurse, Shumway is a “last hour” volunteer who sits with patients who are near death while the family takes a much-needed break. Shumway also visits homebound hospice patients.
Consider the Daffy-Jills Garden Club, the American Association of University Women and the Red Cross, where she served capably and cheerfully in various capacities. In addition, her volunteer work with the NC Democratic Party earned her the coveted Liston B. Ramsey Award. The objective of the Second Wind Hall of Fame is “to provide recognition of retirees, sixty years and over, for outstanding service to others and to their community, thus to encourage and provide incentives for other retirees to do likewise.”
She was nominated for the Second Wind Hall of Fame by the Daffy-Jills Garden Club.
