Director Connie Clark has announced that auditions will be March 1 and 3 for David Auburn’s “Proof,” which will wrap the 2013-2014 season for the Tryon Little Theater with performances at the Workshop April 24-May 4.

Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, “Proof” revolves around 25 year old Catherine, who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father Robert, a celebrated mathematician.  How much of her father’s genius has she inherited?

Does his instability come along with it?

Enter her sister Claire, all practicality very intelligent, but not in the genius category of Catherine and Hal Dobbs, who studied under Robert when working on his doctoral degree.

Like Catherine, Hal wonders if in math you have your best years by your mid-20s, and aren’t likely to achieve great breakthroughs with amazing mathematical proofs after that time.

Though on the surface “Proof” sounds very heavy, it is not.  Variety, the newspaper to the theatrical profession, called “Proof” “wonderfully funny.”  The New York Observer said “’Proof’ surprises us with its aliveness.

Auburn is unshowily fresh and humane, and he has written a lovely play.” The New York Daily News said that “Proof” “combines elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre a smart and compassionate play of ideas.”

The actress playing Catherine must be believable as a 25 year old, while the actress playing Claire must be believably 28-32.  Hal should appear in his late 20s, and Robert in his mid-50s to early 60s.

For TLT in past seasons, Clark has directed “Noises Off,” “A Thousand Clowns,” “Sylvia,” “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “Pygmalion.” As an actor she has appeared in numerous TLT productions, including “The Miracle Worker,” “Private Lives,” “Grace & Glorie,” “The Royal Family,” and “The Belle of Amherst.”

Auditions are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1 and 7 p.m. Monday, March 3, both at the Workshop, 516 S. Trade Street, Tryon.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script. Scripts are available for 24-hour checkout at The Book Shelf, 94 N. Trade Street, Tryon.
