“Fiddler on the Roof” goes high tech

You may have seen some “goings on” recently, as the cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” starred in a video being shot around town.
Mark Monaghan, who has appeared on stage for TLT a number of times, arranges publicity for the shows by having local TV stations (WSPA and WYFF) interview actors. In the case of musicals, actors sing a number from the show. It’s a way to get the word out to a broader audience – from Greenville and Spartanburg to Asheville and all areas in between.
“The idea of doing a video came to me when the TLT Board of Directors announced we were only doing four performances,” said Monaghan. “Typically, in community theater, word gets out after the first weekend of performances, so the second weekend sells out. A promotional video is a way to get the word out beforehand. It’s also a way to showcase the natural beauty that is Tryon and involve the community.”
Erik Olsen, local videographer and photographer, spent countless hours at rehearsals taking impromptu shots and arranged a whole day of shooting at different venues around town – from fields and barns to the inside of McGourty’s Pub.
“Everyone was so supportive and the enthusiasm surrounding the promo video was contagious,” said Monaghan. “Although we endured chilly temperatures out in the open, not a soul complained. Our actors want to see a full house, and their dedication to their craft really shows in the video.”
