Girls State taking applications

It’s the time of the year to think about Girl’s State again. Girl’s State is a leadership program sponsored in every state of the U.S by the American Legion Auxiliary.
To be eligible for consideration, a girl must be a rising senior, live in Polk County, be in the upper 25 percent of her class and be active in outside activities. At Polk County High School, the American Legion Auxiliary interviews and chooses citizens as they are called.
In Landrum, the school sponsors the program and the teachers choose the citizen. There are only a few chosen from each school so it is quite an honor to go and it looks favorable on a resume. Many of congresswomen and military leaders came through Girls State.
This is a highly structured program, a week long away from family and friends. Many new friends are made and participants learn and put into practice how the government works. There is an orientation process. Check with a school counselor to apply.
