Leona June Higgins Meanix (June), 88, died on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at her home in Fairfax Station, Va. She was the beloved wife of William H. Meanix Jr. who predeceased her, devoted Mother of Heather (Steve) Hudson of Fairfax Station, Va., William H. Meanix III “Billy” of Fairfax Station, Va. and Kimberly (Duff) Miller of South Glastonbury, Conn., proud grandmother of Ryann Brzoska, Shannon Miller, Kelley Miller, Sean Miller; Tyler Hudson and William Miller, aunt and great-aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, notably Pamela Marra and Judith Bulmer; lifelong friend to Toni Dugan and second mom to Maureen Kermode. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Cicala, from a previous marriage; and her older siblings Hershel, Edward, Robert, Rita, Dorothy and Doris.
June was born (June 19, 1925) to James Higgins and Annabel (Eidson) Higgins and raised in Wellston, Okla. She married naval officer William in California and moved her family more than a dozen times all over the United States. Upon retirement from the military life, June and Bill lived in Jackson, NH; Farmington, Conn. and Tryon, N.C.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. at Church of the Nativity, 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke, Va. Visitation will be the hour preceding the funeral at the smaller chapel of the church. A private burial ceremony by the United States Navy will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local animal shelter.
