Christmas Eve fire damages Tryon home

A fire early Christmas Eve morning damaged a home in Tryon.
Tryon emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 1:48 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24 to a possible structure fire at 970 East Howard Street, Tryon.
Tryon Police Corporal Terrill McCain and Officer Blake Fuller arrived on scene to find a fire in the kitchen area that was spreading rapidly to other parts of the house, according to Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis. Tryon fire personnel arrived, along with mutual aid from Columbus and Saluda.
Crews contained the fire and did a search of the home to ensure there were no occupants.
The owner of the home, Calvin Jones, said he was not at home when the fire began. Jones received assistance from the Polk County Red Cross. Polk County EMS also responded to the scene to stand by during the fire. Jones’ has two dogs that were not injured in the fire.
Fire crews cleared the scene shortly before 5 a.m.
Davis said the fire appears to be accidental, but remains under investigation by the Tryon Police Department, the Tryon Fire Department and the Polk County Fire Marshal’s Office.
