A culture of excellence in education

To the editor:
As the parent of a graduate of Polk County High School and the grandparent of a current Polk Central student, I was very pleased to see confirmation that our excellent public school system continues to be rated at or near the top of the 115 school districts in the State.
The unanimously supported resolution that I placed on the agenda of the County Board of Commissioners meeting, Dec. 2, noted that Polk County School System was awarded five-year district accreditation on Nov. 6, 2013.
The BOC resolution also included the results of a recently released in-depth study of all 100 counties in our state by the Public School Forum of North Carolina. This study noted that Polk County School system overall education ranking is number one in the State, we have the third highest graduation rate, and our system met 100 percent of its 2012/13 Annual Measureable Objectives targets.
I am grateful to live in a community that values excellence in education.
