The Meeting Place Senior Center will host a Shucks “Pearls for Purpose” event on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to raise funds for its many programs benefitting the deserving senior residents of Polk County.
The goal is to raise $1,500 or more.
The Meeting Place Senior Center’s mission is to enhance the quality of life and to support independent living for senior residents of Polk County.
With a staff of eight and the help of 50 volunteers, they provide recreational and social activities, educational opportunities, and many other much needed services such as Meals on Wheels and on-site meals, Medicare counseling and information and referral services.
The Meeting Place is partnering with Shucks Pearls from Yonderways for a holiday event. The “Pearls for Purpose” event will be hosted at The Meeting Place. The Meeting Place is located at 75 Carmel Lane, Columbus, N.C. Participants can shop for genuine pearl jewelry with a portion of proceeds going directly to the Senior Center programs. There will be hundreds of pearl jewelry items ready to purchase.
In addition, the food service staff, under the direction of Renée Duvall, will be serving a soup and salad bar available from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for a small fee for lunchtime shoppers. The first 50 guests will receive a pair of pearl earrings courtesy of Yonderways.
Most often folks regard genuine pearl jewelry as being very expensive and something worn solely for special occasions.
“These aren’t your mom’s standard string of white pearls, although we do have AAA Graded pearl strands,” saidDonna Lyerly, a partner in the Hendersonville-based company. “Our pearls come in a myriad of shapes, colors and quality and are priced starting at only $5. And we are very honored to share Shucks Pearls with supporters of The Meeting Place.”
Items are also available online, shoppers receive free shipping and can support The Meeting Place until Dec. 31 by going to and using the coupon code polk15.
