Once again, I am very grateful to live in Polk County, where so many people give so much of their time (and sometimes money) to help others.

The Patriot Salute to Veterans Association has made us extremely proud, and the column, Honor Your Veteran, in the Tryon Daily Bulletin has been appreciated by so many people!

The upcoming Veterans Day Parade will be held in downtown Columbus on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. Following the parade, a memorial service will be held at Veterans Memorial Park. Ret. Marine General James E. Livingston will be the grand marshal. General Livingston is a Medal of Honor recipient. Tom Crabtree, WSPA-TV news anchor, will announce the parade as it marches by.

Recently, I came across an interesting Green Creek Elementary School “yearbook” that was printed when my grandson was in a combination kindergarten/first grade class there in 1989.

For many years, combination classes were common in Polk County, and many parents felt their child benefited from listening to the lessons taught to the higher grade students. Actually, some students at Green Creek High School did “skip a grade” and graduated early. My sister, Grace, was one of them.

Thanks to some wonderful volunteers and a picture perfect day last week, Green River Farm Day was a huge success. Tom Calton was one of many who really enjoyed the day. He said. “Green River Farm Day, great ole-timey fun!”

My own requests to the organizers are “Please do it again next year! Can you make it an annual event?“

Happy Birthday to Benny Hines, Sheila Ford, Alex Pittman, John Maddox, Tim Searcy, Chuck Brown, Tami Frazier, Joe Bennett, Teresa Sauve, Chris Brand, Deborah Arledge, Gail Pierce and Jack Sauve.

Among those celebrating wedding anniversaries are Kathy and Joe Nowakowski, Corine and Arthur Scoggins, Debbie and Billy Price, Jane and Jerry Horne, and Janice and David Blackwell. Congratulations to all of you!
