Polk’s defense came out strong stopping Shelby on their first drive of the night and forcing a punt. However, after that initial stop, the Golden Lions offense was simply too much for the Wolverine defense. Shelby scored the first five touchdowns of the game and held a commanding 28-0 halftime lead. Polk eventually scored in the third and fourth quarters with the final score settling at 49-13.
Coach Burce Ollis made no excuses for the loss.
“(It was a) tough way to end certainly, we got beat by a better team tonight, a very talented team,” he said. “But, we had some opportunities early; we made them punt the first time they had the ball. (We) then moved the ball right down the field and missed on a fourth down. Then on the next series we think we have a fumble and we don’t.”
