Must-see art on display at Upstairs

To the Editor:
It has been several years since I’ve written to the TDB to talk about the Upstairs Artspace or any of its happenings. But the current show demands attention. Whether you like contemporary art a little or a lot – or for that matter, you just aren’t sure – This show you have got to see.
It is world class. It would be an exceptional show in any Manhattan, Chicago, Santa Fe or San Francisco gallery of note – and here it is in little ol’ Tryon!
Everything on the wall is done in the medium of encaustics, which means a mixture of paint and wax. That is a very popular medium right now, but it’s also nearly as old as civilization. The mixture gives an opacity to color and dimension that just quietly feels good.
This is not just another show. In my obviously biased opinion it is the best show the Upstairs has ever had in the present gallery. Take your spouse, friends, children and the milkman with you to see it. You owe it to yourself and them. “Not soon comes such another!”
