The Green Creek School Reunion was wonderful! We had a great time, as usual! This year, we missed hearing the beautiful voices of some former students like Bennett Hinsdale, David Cantrell, the Brown twins, the Jacksons and Dean Blackwell. Music has always been a big part of the school’s legacy so these musicians were sorely missed this year.
However, a number of former students shared memories, all with complimentary comments. Many expressed gratitude for the quality education that they, and many others, received at Green Creek School. The oldest former student there was 93-year-old Vernell McDowell. The youngest former student was Natasha Higgins. Both are still residents of Green Creek. The youngest non-student was 2-year-old Celia Pittman, whose father had been a student there. Little Celia didn’t want an ice cream sundae, but her big brother Jacob enjoyed his sundae (and other snacks) very much.
Joyce Walker had spent many hours creating a memory board honoring deceased former Green Creek School students. This board was on display at the reunion. If anyone has a deceased friend or loved one whose name was not on that board, please call me at 828-863-2437 so that the name and date of death can be added to that list. This list will be displayed at next year’s Green Creek reunion.
We really missed those deceased former students who attended our reunions every year for many years. Among those who have passed away in recent years are Audrey and Donavon Hines, Joann Shytle Prince, Dorothy Skipper Stephens, Judy Collins, Katherine Greene Troxler, Larry Shytle, Ray Horne, Jean Bridges, Floyd Fagan, Eugene Cantrell, Junior Vickers and his brother Joe Vickers.
