The Women’s Club of Saluda has announced its selection of Cade Underwood and Kari Malkki as its 2012 scholarship program recipients. Both students attend Polk County High School, ranking first and third in their 2012 graduating class.
Underwood will continue his education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Malkki will attend Brown University. Both Underwood and Malkki also reside in Saluda.
The Women’s Club of Saluda is one of the oldest continuing clubs in Saluda, starting in 1924 as a book club and evolving into a non-profit social organization, with a mission of community service. The club’s scholarship program began more than 60 years ago and has helped many students continue their formal and non-traditional, education.
Each year the club has a major fundraiser, aimed at replenishing the scholarship fund for the next year. The fundraiser this year will be The Saluda Doo Wop Hop to be held on Saturday, June 2 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Saluda Center, 64 Greenville St. in Saluda. A deejay will spin music from the 1950s and 1960s, along with diner-style food, vintage cars, and a fun raffle.
The cost for the event is only $25 for adults, $10 for children under 12 and a portion of that cost is tax-deductible. Tickets can be purchased by contacting club president Sandie Bright at 828-749-3897 or 828-301-4161.
