Learn to quilt an instant garden beginning May 21

Marilyn Doheny, internationally famous quilting author and artist, will hold her second annual spring “Over the Top” quilting retreat May 21 – 28 at the Historic Melrose Inn in Tryon.

Students will make 12 diverse fan designs in the first three days using innovative techniques, featuring the use of Marilyn’s 9 Degree Circle Wedge Rulers. Students will turn their fans into garden elements like butterflies, flowers, dragon flies and snails on days four, five and six. The quilting retreat event starts with a Saturday night celebration dinner where students from around the world meet one another, then continues with an overview of how each day will unfold. The title of the retreat is “Spectacular Fan Sampler.”

Doheny, with over 40 years experience, selected the Historic Melrose Inn to hold her quilting retreats after her 20-year search for a perfect location. All retreats are held at Doheny’s new home, the Historic Melrose Inn in Tryon, built in 1889.
