Remembering Oak Hall Hotel

Barbara Bradley Johnson worked at Oak Hall for about a year and a half in the late 1970s before learning the owner, Clara Edwards, had sold the property and it was to be torn down. Johnson’s husband, James A. Johnson of Inman, S.C., took these photographs after Johnson found out the hotel was closing. “I was broken-hearted, as were many Tryonites,” Johnson said. Johnson worked with Ted King, Frank Brown and Nonie Robinson and said she never forgot the lessons they taught her. “Nonie has passed away,” Johnson said, “but I do believe Ted and Frank both still live in Tryon.” Johnson said she believed King worked at the hotel for more than 50 years.
