Hazel Steadman Johnson

Hazel Steadman Johnson, 83, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at White Oak Manor, Tryon.
She was the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Sudie Honeycutt Steadman and the wife of the late James Buford Johnson for 59 years. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren and, until September 2009, a resident of Green Creek. A graduate of Green Creek High School, she was an expert seamstress, being self-employed and working for Butte Knitting Mills. Disabilities caused by the Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which she contracted in 1976, forced her into early retirement.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Taylor-Witt and Johnny Witt of Green Creek; daughter-in-law, Pam Hipp Johnson of Tryon; grandsons, G. Darrell (Natalie) Taylor of Raleigh, N.C., and Wesley Johnson of Tryon; sisters, Lois Cordell and Jessie Cobb of Rutherfordton, N.C.; three great-grandchildren and four nephews. She also leaves behind special family members, Preston and Maggie White of Green Creek and Keith White of Green Creek. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by son, James Elliot “Elmo” Johnson, and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, Coxe Rd. Green Creek, with the Rev. Stephen Abe officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 at McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon.
The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.
