Polk County native and coach Seth Vining will bring his Lakeview Academy Lions from Gainesville, Ga., to take on the Polk County Wolverines on Saturday, Jan. 8.
The Lakeview – Polk County varsity girls game will begin at 4 p.m. at the Polk County High School gymnasium, and the varsity boys game will start around 5:30 p.m.
Vining began his 37th year in coaching just 10 wins short of his 700th career win. His Lakeview Lions have four wins and seven losses so far this season.
Lakeview Academy is a private academy just outside Gainesville, Ga. Vining has been coaching the Lions for the past seven seasons. During his coaching career in Georgia he has the unusual distinction of earning state championships in both girls and boys sports. In the late 1970s he had back-to-back state champion girls basketball teams and in 2001 and 2003 his boys basketball teams won the Georgia state championships.
One of the interesting stories in this year’s game is the fact that Vining will be coaching against his nephew Sam Vining, a junior at Polk County High and a member of the Wolverine boys basketball team.
Vining is married to the former Cathy Fincher of Tryon. Both have family still living in the area.
