Joan B. VanderMale Hoskyns, 81, passed away on Jan. 3, 2011 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Ms. Hoskyns was a daughter of the late Peter Adrian VanderMale and Rose Elizabeth Roth VanderMale of Jackson, Mich. She was a graduate of Michigan State University and a member of the Alpha Phi sorority.
Ms. Hoskyns moved to Tryon in 1957 where she became active in the Tryon Garden Club, the Tryon Country Club Womens Golf, Red Fox Womens Golf Association and the Western Carolina Womens Golf Association. She, along with Margaret Hannon, Nancy Manchester and Marie Butler, won the first National Walter Hagan Cancer golf tournament in 1975. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a flight attendant for PanAm and Eastern Air Lines. After her children were grown, she returned to the travel industry and worked as a travel agent in Spartanburg until her retirement in 1997.
Ms. Hoskyns is survived by four children; Mary Jo Hoskyns of Ashburn, Va., Lynn Ann Chajewski (George) of Charleston, S.C., Suzanne Peterson of Spartanburg, S.C., and Louis C. Hoskyns III (Carole) of Boiling Springs, S.C.; five grandchildren, Colleen S. Dieterly (Tom) of Asheville, N.C., Adrian and Ryan Peterson of Spartanburg and Jackson and Cole Hoskyns of Boiling Springs, S.C.; Olga Chajewski of Springfield, Mass. and Michael Chajewski of New York and two great grandsons, John and Charles Dieterly of Asheville, N.C., and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two sisters, Margarite Hoxie Mills and Mary Anne Dowling and a brother, James B. VanderMale.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2010 at Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Rd., Roebuck, S.C. 29376. Visitation will be followed by words of encouragement and prayer by Reverend Preston Edmonds.
