Blitzen Benz does it again with Putnam Park cruise

Tryons Blitzen Benz Racing Team won its third ChumpCar World Series endurance race of the season Sunday at Putnam Park Raceway outside of Indianapolis.

In a starting field of 33 cars, the Mercedes-Benz race car completed 271 laps in 7 hours on the 1.8 mile road-racing course to win by a four-lap margin.

Car builder Ned Gallaher of Gallahers Restorations shared driving responsibilities with Mark Thomas of Winchester, Va., and Jim Wright of Tryon. &bsp;

The team donated the $1,000 winners purse to Indianas Putnam County Food Bank to help families severely affected by the current recession.

At its upcoming season finale, the Blitzen Benz team has entered two cars in ChumpCar races to be run at Americas famed Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway on Sept. 25-26.

One of those weekend races will determine the Southeast Region Championship.
