Tryon Arts and Crafts receives grant for two summer interns

Tryon Arts and Crafts has received a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation to hire two part-time high school student summer interns to assist with its Summer Sizzler youth art camp as well as two weeks of art activities for the Polk County summer school program.
The Summer Sizzler program runs four weeks for students ages 10 and up. Each week the students will spend the morning exploring several media such as pottery, wood, drawing or lapidary and in the afternoon there will be a variety of programs including music and movement activities. The hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a break for lunch. Other crafts may include: weaving, precious metal clay, glass mosaics, fused glass, basketry, and blacksmithing.
The summer school art program is being offering in conjunction with Polk County Middle School and will consist of eight to 10 afternoons of pottery, blacksmithing, fused glass, fiber arts, jewelry and lapidary, followed by an art show for parents and friends.
These summer interns will be high school students with an interest in art and/or music and working with children. The interns will receive two days of orientation and training and then will assist with the summer school art program in June. He or she will assist the instructors in July and August in the Summer Sizzler arts and crafts program in the morning and in the music and movement program in the afternoon. The interns will also supervise the students during lunch and recreation.
