In November 2010, the Polk County High School Cadets will travel to Washington, D.C. to play a public performance on the South Lawn of the Capitol grounds for the citizens and politicians of the U.S. Capitol.
Students will also have the opportunity to discover the history of the Capitol city, tour the Capitol Building and to visit the Holocaust Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, The National Monument, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Smithsonian Museums.
This will be a trip for these students to remember for a lifetime and hopefully instill a lifetime of patriotic respect and inspiration, says Band Director Cindy Gilbert.
The band will hold a yard sale and cookout on Saturday, May 1, at Stearns Park to help fund the trip. The yard sale will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cookout will be held from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Cookout items offered will include burgers, hot dogs, sodas and desserts.
Meal combinations will be offered and items will also be sold separately. The yard sale is open to other vendors with a small donation per space, plus 10 percent of gross sales going to the band program.
