On Monday the Polk County girls soccer team played host to a solid team from Asheville. The JV game started well for Polk with Kelly Calvert #9 giving Polk a 1-0 advantage.
The game continued in a deadlock until Asheville tied it up midway through the second half. Then with less than four minutes to go in the game Asheville put in one more goal and was able to hold on for the slim 2-1 victory over the Wolverines. If the JV game was any indictor then the varsity game was going to be a fight to the finish.
The varsity game started off with almost instantaneous action with Brittany Phipps #12 scoring less than two minutes into the game to give Polk a 1-0 lead.
Polk continued to keep the pressure on Ashevilles defense with their quick and decisive passing and it eventually paid dividends with Anna Trakas scoring back to back goals for Polk giving them a commanding 3-0 lead.
Yet this was hardly the end of the offense for Polk in the first half with Jennifer Humphrey #20 adding another goal as well as Richie Sciuva adding one more just before halftime.
Polk dominated Asheville in the first half but this Asheville team had much more to give in the second half.
At the start of the second half Asheville came out a different team looking to put pressure on Polks defense which had been almost impenetrable the whole first half.
With this new focus Asheville was able to keep Polk off the scoreboard in the second half and the game ended in a 5-0 victory for the Polk County Lady Wolverines.
For the Wolverines this is an important win due to the fact Asheville is a much larger school and has always been very competitive.
