Russell W. Cloud, 77, of Tryon passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the Smith Phayer Hospice House, Landrum.
Born in Reidsville, N.C., he was the son of the late Jesse W. and Etta Cloud. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served as a Staff Sgt.during the Korean Conflict. Russell graduated from Reidsville High School, attended Elon College, Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He moved his family to Tryon in 1960 and worked for Jackson & Jackson, where he worked his way up to president of the company. He coached Little League Baseball for ten years, was on the board of the Tryon Country Club and served as a trustee of Northwestern Bank. Mr. Cloud was well known for his beautiful baritone voice and sang at many functions throughout his life. Mr. Cloud was a deacon in the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, where he sang in the choir for over 40 years.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Isabel (Inky) Cloud and five daughters, Judith Cloud of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Jeanne Perone (Bob) and Kathy Baum (Lantz) both of Jacksonville, Fla.; Ruth McBurney and Carol Cloud-Rowell both of Tryon. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Katie and Rob Perrone, Wil and Jessie McBurney, Lantz Russell Baum and Chloe Rowell; two nephews, Hank Hobbs of Charlotte, N.C., and Jim Hobbs of Boston, Ma.
A memorial service to celebrate Russells life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010 in the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon.
