Community dance at Stearns Gym

Published 4:35 pm Tuesday, March 2, 2010

The Innovative Events Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation and the Congregational Church (UCC) of Tryon is sponsoring a community dance at Stearns Gym, Peak Street in Columbus, Saturday, March 13, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The dance features many different styles of Old Time and community dancing, but will focus primarily on Contra dancing.

The music will be Old Time mountain string band music featuring fiddles, guitars, mandolins, banjos and upright bass. Tunes are played in the Old Time way, much like jazz, where a simple and very basic melody is improvised by each instrument making the music extremely rich and complex. The group Local Produce featuring Tryons Doug Rostick, will provide the music.
