Elsie Shields Scruggs

Elsie Shields Scruggs died February 24, 2010 at LaurelWoods Assisted Living, Columbus.
She was born January 30, 1919 in Spartanburg County to George and Nancy Hammett Shields. She and husband, Jack, moved to the Melvin Hill Community of Polk County in the early 1940s. They became active members of the Melvin Hill Church of the Brethren, where she was known for her fine southern cooking and hospitality.
Her survivors include three daughters, Mary Ostheim of Tryon, Barbara Scruggs of Cary, N.C., Judy Cyr (Frank) of Inman, S.C.; a son, David Scruggs (Diane) of Inman, S.C.; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and daughter-in-law Brenda Brown Scruggs of Green Creek.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Scruggs, in 1997 and a son, J. “Mac” in 2004.
LaurelWoods was her home the past five years. She deeply appreciated the loving care she received from her family there.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Melvin Hill Church of the Brethren, 555 Melvin Hill Road, Columbus, conducted by Rev. Earl Byers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
