Polk topples No. 1 seed in state playoffs

Polk County went on the road and knocked off a No. 1 seed in the first round of the state 2A playoffs on Monday.
The Wovlerines, a No. 3 seed from the Western Highlands Conference, outplayed Ashe County for a 62-48 win. Ashe County, 16-8, was the top seed from the Mountain Valley Conference.
Polk County was led in scoring by senior guard Landon Schlabach with 18 points. He got scoring help from Parrish Gary, who finished with 13 points, and Andre Overholt, who had 10 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Wolverines had eight players score in the game, including Fidal Wilkins with eight, Bryant Twitty with seven, and Jeffery Bontrager with four.
Polk, 9-14, advances to a second round game today against Newton Conover, the No. 2 seed from the Catawba Valley Conference, Newton Conover 16-12, advanced with an 87-72 win over S. Central.
