Tryon Town Council sets goals, seeks way to save

The Town of Tryon began looking at ways to save money next fiscal year with options discussed during the Tryon Town Council’s recent retreat.
Tryon Town Council met for two days last weekend and came up with a long list of goals for the next fiscal year. Some money-saving options discussed included having the town contract out recycling and possibly other garbage services. The council also discussed sharing equipment and personnel costs and purchasing in bulk with other area municipalities and Polk County.
The future of the Harmon Field community center was another topic. Some discussion was had concerning more opportunities for area youth with the former Tryon Middle School building being used for a recreational center. The town has agreed to sell the building to Tryon Arts and Crafts, but due to state requirements associated with the grant used to buy the building, the town could look at other options.
Recycling was discussed. Council agreed to look into contracting out curbside recycling and also agreed to speak with the county about more recycling opportunities in Tryon, such as drop off bins.

More cooperation with County in relation to mobile recycling unit.
Examine service levels for solid waste, recycling, yard debris, and C&D pick-up.
Work towards establishment of County wide/regional water system.
Work to institute a new utility rate structure that better reflects exact costs/charges.
Move yard debris and C&D pick-up under operations of Sanitation Fund.
Examine the possibility
Expand events/add one day to each event.
Fully complete Tourism Development Authority website.
Become “bike friendly” (bike racks, motorcycle parking).
Become more “equestrian friendly” (aesthetic improvements, trailer parking).
Plan for use of Saluda Grade/RR.
Incentives for non-retail businesses to move off Trade Street.
Provide for public restrooms.
Solution for parking issues.
Fill empty buildings.
Move Public Works building to more appropriate location (possibly sewer plant property).
Plan for use of the depot.
Incentive program for downtown businesses/penalties for empty buildings.
Plan for Tryon Federal Building (possible public/private partnership).
Update downtown streetscape plan/fund a portion of plan in FY 2010/11.
Plan for the future of Town Hall building.
WiFi for downtown area.
