Gladys Lingerfelt

Gladys Quinn Lingerfelt, 90, of White Oak Manor, Tryon and Rural Hall, N.C., departed this life on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010. She was born in McDowell County, N.C., on July 14, 1919, the tenth of 12 children born to Hicks S. and Mattie Woody Quinn. Her husband of 50 years, Garland M. Lingerfelt, passed away in 1992. A son, Michael Lee Lingerfelt, predeceased her in 2004. Mrs. Lingerfelt is survived by her children, Sharon Edwards (John), of Mooresville, N.C.; Gerald Q. Lingerfelt (Brenda) of Canton, Ga.; Betty Jo Key (Hugh) of Tryon; and daughter-in-law Joanne Brasco Lingerfelt of Fairfax, Va., as well as grandchildren Jason Key, Raleigh, N.C.; Kristin Key Bolick, Huntersville, N.C.; Kate L. Wilson, Houston, Texas; Brian Lingerfelt, Atlanta, Ga.; Amanda Lingerfelt, Atlanta, Ga.; Kevin Lingerfelt, San Francisco, Calif.; Rebecca Lingerfelt, Richmond, Va., and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Joe R. Quinn of San Antonio, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lingerfelt graduated in one of the first Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) programs in Forsyth County, N.C., and followed that calling for many years. She was an active citizen of her community for more than 40 years, being a charter member of Forsyth Lady Lions Club, serving as president of North Forsyth High School PTA and as an election volunteer, and Sunday School teacher and choir member of Rural Hall Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Lingerfelt was an avid golfer and painter and a beloved mother and grandmother.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Chapel of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Tryon. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Rural Hall, N.C.
