Margaret K. Swann

Margaret Kerhulas Swann of Tryon died Sunday, January 31, 2010 in Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum.
She was the daughter of the late Ernest Anastasios Kerhulas and Christiana Goodman Kerhulas. She was educated at Tryon City School and graduated from Winthrop College. Mrs. Swann began her teaching career in Greenville, S.C., and later taught school in Old Fort, N.C., and Tryon High School and after 27 years, retired in 1977 from Polk Central.
She and her husband were closely involved with young peoples activities. Their home was open to students on weekends. She was on the original board to establish a youth center. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
During her life as a member of the Congregational Church, she was president of the Womens Fellowship, a deacon, taught Sunday school for many years and a leader of the youth group.
Community services included participation in the board of the Cancer Society, 4-H, and she also served on the family selection committee of Habitat for Humanity. She was a charter member of the Green Blades Garden Club.
Surviving is her son, Robert Fred Swann; one grandson, John Lawrence Stevens IV (Jay). Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Fred Swann, who died November 23, 2003 and a daughter, Anna Stevens, who died May 13, 1993.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010 in the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, with Dr. Robert Barrows officiating.
