In mid December, Polk County Middle Schools staff members and students held a tribute to retiring teacher Sheila Butt, for her years of service and to show solidarity against cancer, which Ms. Butt has been battling throughout the school year.
In addition to creating a banner stating, “We love you Ms. Butt,” students and staff wrote sentiments of support to her and posted pictures of themselves with Ms. Butt along the schools hallway near her classroom.
The middle school students purchased pink balloons and staff members donned pink T-shirts for the event held Thursday, December 17, at the school.
As they all gathered on the soccer field to hear Ms. Butt speak, the school members spelled out on the field the word “HOPE,” a strong feeling that each holds for Butt and other loved ones who are fighting cancer.
Students popped the balloons to signify their “busting cancer.”
In addition to showing support and hope for Ms. Butt, the school members also made the event their official kickoff event for this years Relay For Life fundraising.
