Meriam ‘Jo’ Cornette

Meriam Josephine Deweese Jo Cornette, 63, was an Asheville resident for 32 years before moving to her home in Boiling Springs, SC, where she died on Tuesday, December 22, 2009.

A native of Buncombe Co., Mrs. Cornette was a daughter of the late John S. and Myrtle V. Coxe Deweese. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Helen Deweese, and brothers, Jimmy and Kenny Deweese.

Mrs. Cornette had worked as an in-home health care giver. She was a member of Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Ginger Smith and husband Ernie; sons, Raymond Scott Cornette, and Mark Cornette and wife Clarissa; sisters, Jerlene Metcalf, Blanche Shelton, and Glenda Carver; brothers, Donald, Bobby, and Floyd Deweese; grandchildren, Stephanie Parris, Elijah, Hannah, Michael, and Austin Smith, Luke, and Rachel Cornette, and Michael Fox; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Mrs. Cornette will be at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave., Asheville, with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Holcombe Branch Cemetery, near Barnardsville, NC.

Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Sunday at the funeral home.
