Tree lighting

Tryons downtown will feature several new holiday decoration elements this year. The most conspicuous of them will be a live, decorated tree. And a 45-foot Magnolia grandiflora located on South Trade Street across from the Upstairs Artspace will be the towns “Tannenbaum.”

Because of its size and presence, the Trade Street magnolia seemed the ideal candidate for seasonal lighting to members of the Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA) during discussions to sponsor a Tryon Christmas Tree.

TDDA’s Crys Armbrust says, “Albeit a somewhat atypical choice when compared with the more traditional options, the magnolia is indeed about as Southern a tree as it gets.”

Local business owners and residents made donations to cover the costing for LED lighting and the Town of Tryon and its employees helped prune the tree and hang the lights.

The tree lighting will be held on December 4 at 5:30 p.m. during the Christmas Stroll. A concert preview by the community chorus will also accompany the lighting. All are welcome.
