Tryon investigates rock wall for Laurel Ave.

The Town of Tryon had plans to place curb and guttering on Laurel Avenue, but residents want to bring back a former rock wall instead. Town officials are now considering allowing property owners to install a rock wall.

Tryon Town Council Tuesday decided to investigate the idea and may contribute $350 toward the $1,500 it is estimated the rock wall will cost. The town is considering contributing only $350 to the project because that is the cost the town would pay to install curb and gutter along that section of road.

The town recently installed sidewalks in the area and because of drainage issues is now planning to curb and gutter the area.

Laurel Avenue residents say there used to be a rock wall along an 80-foot section of road and they would like that to be rebuilt because it would be more in keeping with the historic character of the road. Many homes have rock walls on the roadway along Laurel Avenue.

Town council tabled the decision on whether to contribute the money until next month.
