Cardinals to battle Blacksburg at home

Two down. Two to go.

Landrum will try to keep rolling toward its goal of a Region II title with a game at home against Blacksburg tonight. Landrum is tied with Christ Church for first in the region at 2-0 with two region games left.

The Cardinals outplayed Southside Christian last week for a 19-7 win, while Blacksburg, 1-1 in the region, picked up a 27-6 region win over Whitmire.

A week earlier Blacksburg fell to Christ Church 41-21.&bsp; The Wildcats earlier in the season earned a win against Southside Christian, 29-7.

In that game the Wildcats regained the services of running back Lanell Dasher, who transferred back to the school. Dasher broke loose for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Blacksburg then lost five straight in non-region play, including two by shutout. As a result, Blacksburg has been outscored on the season by nearly 16 points a game.

In contrast, Landrum is outscoring opponents by about five points per game.

The Cardinals have been led by the outstanding play of quarterback Brandon Cannon, who has been effective as both a passer and rusher. He is among the area&squo;s leaders in rushing with 610 yards on 99 carries, averaging better than six yards per carry.

Landrum&squo;s leading rusher is Tyler Burrell with 686 total yards and about eight yards per carry.

Defensively, Landrum has been led by junior Antonio Barron with 96 tackles and five sacks, and senior Xavier Marrs with 79 tackles and six sacks.

Senior defensive back Spike Brannon leads the team in interceptions with three.
