Cardinals shine in soggy Homecoming win

uded Landrum&squo;s 2009 Homecoming festivities at halftime, but the Cardinals didn&squo;t let it dampen their performance on the gridiron.

Landrum shined in a 19-7 win lead by a dominating defense and a stellar offensive performance from Tyler Burrell.

Landrum&squo;s defense denied Southside Christian any opportunity to build momentum and&bsp; Burrell spearheaded the Cardinals offensive attack with 193 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Burrrell ran through and around Southside&squo;s defense, avering better than 11 yards per carry, and chipped in 40 receiving yards.

Burrell wasted little time making an impact, breaking free early in the first quarter for an 88-yard touchdown dash. A 23-yard TD pass from Brandon Cannon to Tyler Logan gave Landrum a 13-0 lead.

SSC got on the board in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 13-7 at halftime. But Burrell found the endzone again in the third quarter on a 10-yard TD run that put the game away.

The Cardinals&squo; defense, which held SSC to just 149 total yards, made sure the lead was safe, shutting out the Sabres in the second half. Landrum forced five turnovers and held SSC (2-5, 0-3) to less than three yards per carry on the ground.

The win lifts Landrum to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in Region II, still tied with Christ Church for first.
