Born in Henderson County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Lilly Burrell Coggins. She was the widow of Bill Newman, who died in 2004. Mrs. Newman was a member of Pacolet Baptist Church in Lynn.

Surviving are two sons, William Earl Newman Jr. of Brevard, N.C., and David Newman of Spartanburg, S.C.; three daughters, Kathy Shockley of Boiling Springs, S.C., Martha Newman of the home, and Rita Ruff of Mill Spring; two sisters, Ruth Russell of Tuxedo, N.C., and Dorothy Metcalf of Travelers Rest, S.C.; one brother, Raymond Coggins of Tuxedo, N.C. Also 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 in Polk Memorial Gardens, with Rev. William Heatherly officiating.

Family will be at their respective homes.
