Evelyn Woods

Born in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Edward and Harriett Marie Leggett Stewart. She received her masters degree in education from Wheelock College in Boston, Mass., in 1975. She was the English as a second language&bsp; coordinator at Isothermal Community College since 1991. Ms. Woods was a national and North Carolina certified CASAS trainer, was president of Polk County Literacy Council and received the 2009 Golden Apple Award. She was a long time member and 1994 chairman of the International Convention of the southeastern chapter of American Rhododendron Society. Member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, where she served on the Vestry.

Surviving are one son, Joel Garcia-Romero of Mexico; one sister, Ruth Bartlett of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a god-daughter, Sarah Smart of Surrey, England; a great-niece, Kaylah Bartlett of Jacksonville, Fla.; nephews Joshua and Andrew Bartlett of Plymouth, Mass.

A memorial mass will be held&bsp;&bsp; at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009 in the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Tryon, with Father Walter Bryan officiating.
