The driver was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Both lanes of traffic were temporarily shut down for a while, and many vehicles made U-turns and went back down the Grade to avoid the delay. One lane of traffic was opened at around 8:45 a.m., allowing traffic to begin moving gradually again, although drivers continued to report long delays. Traffic was still backed up to close to the N.C. welcome center as of 1 p.m. and traffic was backing up on Hwy. 108 in Columbus as some drivers apparently looked for alternative routes. Around 1:15 p.m., officials said they planned to open both lanes of traffic for a while to relieve some of the congestion before having to close both lanes to remove the truck, which had been moved to the side of the road.
