Murphy eliminates PCHS softball in extra innings

The visiting Murphy Lady Bulldogs doubled in a run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and then kept the Lady Wolverines from retaliating in the bottom half to escape with the win.

Polk struck first, though, in the third inning. Senior shortstop Denise Edwards got on base with a bunt single, stole second, and scored on two wild pitches.

Murphy answered in the next half inning with a sacrifice fly, and according to Polk coach Jeff Wilson, &dquo;it basically turned into a pitcher&squo;s duel after that.&dquo;

&dquo;It was nip and tuck the whole way,&dquo; he said. &dquo;We had some outstanding performances on defense, especially Kayla Byrd at catcher and Alyssa Montgomery at third. We hit some line drives right at [Murphy]. It was a tough way to end the season, but I was very proud of the effort the team gave.&dquo;

Wilson also mentioned how important assistant coaches Mitch Davis and Jerry Hensley have been to the team&squo;s success. Polk finishes the season with a record of 19-7.
